Odyssey

Odyssey and the team

Odyssey is the second car, currently under construction, to be built by the OSU Solar Vehicle Team. The car will race in the 2010 ASC Formula Sun Grand Prix. This car builds upon the design of the last vehicle, adding many improvements and fixing issues found during the last construction.

Some key features of Odyssey are:

  • 1030 half solar cells (74.5 square cm) from SolarWorld, cut in half using a laser cutter
  • 6 arrays of cells in series with bypass diodes between every 12 half cells to make around 8 square meters of array
  • 560 of the 18650 size TrustFire lithium ion batteries, 28 packs in series of 20 in parallel
  • Optimized titanium frame and supension
  • Carbon fiber and honeycomb core body
  • Three custom wheels with Dunlop Solar Max tires
  • One hub motor in rear wheel, NGM hub motor
  • In house solar cell lamination
  • In house battery management system and maximum point power trackers
  • LED blinkers and brake light
