The next day we headed to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Here we stopped for a hike around and through the Kileau Iki crater that was last active only 40 years ago. 40 years ago all the floor on the bottom of this crater was roiling lava. It is about 1 mile across, and the total hike was 4 miles, decending 400 ft into and back up out of the crater. It took a couple of hours.
