Abstract: Feminist researchers have been critically examining science for more than a century, but the recent focus is less on the science and more on the philosophy of science. In Beyond Epistemology Sharyn Clough turns a discerning eye on this trend, finding that philosophy - particularly epistemology - is not the most useful focus for feminists engaged in science criticism. Utilizing Donald Davidson's philosophy of language, Clough reveals the problems of epistemology to be unnecessary for feminist science studies and advocates instead a return to the empirical research that guided feminist science studies until a few decades ago. Case studies from feminist work in evolutionary theory serve to illustrate her arguments. From a review by Joseph Rouse, Wesleyan University: "Sharyn Clough's Beyond Epistemology is an important intervention in feminist science studies and the philosophy of science more generally. Clough argues convincingly that the epistemological turn in feminist science studies has been self-defeating. Her pragmatist alternative constructively reclaims earlier feminist commitment to critical engagement with specific scientific projects." On-line reviews also available: Women's
