Adapting and implementing guided discovery notes in combinatorics for required math-major classes

Project Summary:The goal of this project was to adapt Ken Bogart's successful NSF-funded project, "Teaching Introductory Combinatorics by Guided Group Discovery'', for a course in which the usual enrollment is double the maximum recommended by Ken's project. In Fall 2003, I used Ken's manuscript in this course, a required junior-level math major course in discrete mathematics at Oregon State. We adapted Ken's notes and method for larger class size, for more heterogeneous student mathematical background and motivation, and for some difference in course material.  Some material has been reordered; in other places exposition and summarizing material have been added in an effort to reduce the students' dependence on the instructor.  The challenge was to maintain discovery while expanding the discussion and encouragement, which seems to be necessary in a larger class.
