[Barneby (1964: 941) discusses the issue of priority versus common sense, A. l. var. diphysus typically has purple flowers while A. d. var. albiflorus Gray appears to have been an albino which was unfortunately given taxonomic status.  Here I concur with the opinion of Barneby and therefore consider A.l. var. albiflorus (Gray) Schoener to be a synonym.]
