The Instragram Effect

Is social media changing our demand for public land?

Public lands in the United States have recently experienced a significant increase in visitation levels. Journalists and park managers suggest Instagram, a social media platform, is a reason for this increase. We explore this issue within Oregon State Parks using data on geotagged photo uploads to Instagram as a potential influential determinant of park visitation. Using a variety of model specifications, we show suggestive evidence that the provision of information by georeferenced content in Instagram can be correlated with increases in visitation ranging from 1.9 to 14.5 percent. We also find evidence that viral, or influential, social media post may influence visitation for many months after posting.
