Photos of Xanthoria polycarpa initiating in and on other lichens

(Sorry this is slow to load, but you really can't see much unless I use this resolution...)

On the lichen listserver some people have expressed interest in the classic topic of how ascospores from lichenized fungi relocate an appropriate photobiont. Sieglinde Ott and others have postulated a phenomenon to explain this: ascospores capture the photobiont from juvenile lichens or soredia.

In western Oregon, USA, I have seen many examples of Physcia tenella apparently "morphing" into Xanthoria polycarpa. Because many lichenologists have not seen this, I'm trying to take some photos to show it. Here is my first attempt.

Photos 1-4 are from Quercus twigs in Corvallis, Oregon. Photos 5-6 are from twigs an ornamental legume tree in Corvallis (not sure of the genus).
