Mth 254 Documents

This page lists old tests, notes, Maple worksheets, sample problems, etc., for Mth 254. You may find this material useful for studying. Expect some overlaps in the various files. Eventually very old files will dribble off the bottom.

Many of the documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF) or are Maple worksheets (MWS).

PDF files are "Portable Document Files." You can use the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, available at http://www.adobe.com, to view or print PDF files. The Acrobat Reader plug-in is installed in the browser(s) on many campus computers. There are many other software packages for reading PDF files.

Maple Worksheets (MWS) require Maple to be useful.

2007 Winter Mth 254 Midterm
PDF, 29 KB, 4 pages, 8 problems
The version of the test posted here is the corrected section 050 version. The correct answers are
C | B D B | D C A | C
Problem number 4 on all versions of the actual test had a typographical error in it and therefore the correct answer (and the most popular) was E. Thus for the actual test the correct answers were
Section 050: C | B D (B)E | D C A | C
Section 070: A | D A (C)E | A A C | B
MLC Make-up: B | D A (D)E | B B A | C
The answer in parantheses is the intended, but incorrect, answer for the actual test, and E was the correct answer, because of the error. The average on the test was 66/90 (73 %). That is a good average - congratulations!

1999 Fall Mth 254 Double and Triple Integrals in Maple
PDF, 51 KB, 5 pages
MWS, 20 KB, Maple Worksheet
Maple has limited, but useful, support for double and triple integrals in its student package (a standard part of Maple). This worksheet illustrates how to use the commands for double and triple integrals. With one or two kludges, we are able to compute the gravitational attraction of a ball with density depending only on the distance from the center. There are probably better ways to arrange the calculation, so by all means, try to improve this worksheet.

1996 Fall Mth 254 Of Rabbits, Graphs and Eigenvalues
PDF, 74 KB, 5 pages
Leonardo of Pisa, also known as Fibonacci, lived about 1170 to 1250. In 1202 he published the Liber Abaci in which he introduced Arabic, Arabic-Greek, and Hindu arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and the decimal place-value system to Europe. In the same text he introduced a model for the propogation of rabbits, a model which leads to the celebrated Fibonacci numbers. In this note we obtain the Binet formula for the Fibonacci numbers as an application of the notion of eigenvalues. As a second application of eigenvalues we see how to obtain formulae for the number of paths of a given length in a graph.
