About:
The MarcEdit Z39.50 Client is a freeware add-on to the MarcEdit application. The MarcEdit Z39.50 Client provides MarcEdit users with a native Z39.50 client integrated into the MarcEdit Suite. This add-on replaces the former Z39.50 Web Client that utilized the United States Library of Congress'es Z39.50 Web Gateway. So why add a native Z39.50 Client to MarcEdit? First, this is something that has been requested by a large number of MarcEdit users. Over the years, I found that MarcEdit's userbase has grown from the initial target audience of larger academic institutions primarily working with database maintenance issues, to include a large number of smaller public, private and academic institutions that want to use MarcEdit for database maintenance as well as original record creation. While these users found the Z39.50 Web Client to be useful, it lacked the flexibility that many users probably would require. The MarcEdit Z39.50 Client meets some of these needs by providing users with a ready made database of over 400 international Z39.50 databases and the ability to do both batch record searching (i.e., from a list of ISBNs) or perform individual record searching. Moreover, the MarcEdit Z39.50 Client provides a lite MARC editor so users can search, edit and download records straight to their machines.
Special Requirements:
None -- While the MarcEdit Z39.50 Yaz client does include the code necessary to process XML records (which requires Microsoft's XML Parse 3.0+ to utilize), the client currently only makes requests for MARC records.
Awknowledgements:
In creating this utility, I didn't want to spend too much time re-inventing the code necessary to negotiate a Z39.50 session. For that reason, I turned to Index Data, the creators of the YAZ Toolkit which the Z39.50 Client utilizes under the hood. The Yaz Toolkit is an open-source library developed, supported and made available by the good folks at Index Data and I, like many others that provide this type of functionality, are in their debt. Without this toolkit, creating this add-on would have been a much more laborous process. For information about the Yaz Toolkit, please see: http://www.indexdata.dk/yaz/.
