Infographics are a way of communicating facts and statistics visually. Many people understand pictures more quickly and easily than reading text, so infographics are a good way to effectively communicate information. Visualizing data can also help us see patterns that may not have been evident in a simple table or graph.

UNEP keeps a large database of environmental statistics. I spent 3 months at UNEP's data management group in Geneva making a series of posters to highlight the information available in the database. My job was to find innovative ways to visualize the data.

During my internship I learned a lot about graphic design and how to visualize quantitative and geospatial information.

An example of an infographic I made during my UNEP internship.

The infographic shown above highlights several global indicator values that UNEP calculates every year as a way to measure changes in the overall state of the environment.

These days you will find a lot of great infographics on the web and in magazines such as Wired and National Geographic.
