Development of a thermodynamic sea ice model with resolved melt ponds for use in linking climate model parameterizations with field data:
Eric Skyllingstad and I are improving his sea ice melt-pond-resolving model to include various new physical processes. We are using intensive observational data from a few summers to test the model. We are also studying the behavior of melt ponds in the latest Community Earth System Model (CESM). We will combine the two aspects by forcing the melt-pond resolving model with fields from CESM simulations of different summers and comparing the resulting melt-pond characteristics (and their corresponding effect on the energy budget) with the CESM results. One MS student is being trained as part of this project.
