CONSTITUTION OF THE OSU STUDENT CHAPTER OF
THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS

Article I
Name
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be the Oregon State University Student Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.
Article II
Purpose
Section 1. The purposes of this association will include the following:
Promotion of the professional development of its members through interactions between other chapters, related organizations, industries, and the parent body, The Society of Women Engineers.
Encouraging the construction of relationships between students.
Addressing issues of concern to female students in engineering; an example of such an issue would include how to balance a family and a career.
Article III
Members
Section 1. Active Members shall be enrolled students at Oregon State University; have attended two consecutive meetings and have paid the $20.00 dues required by the parent body, The Society of Women Engineers.
Section 2. Associate members shall be faculty or staff interested in the Society of Women Engineers. They shall not be eligible to hold office or vote.
Section 3. Membership in the Society of Women Engineers must be maintained by paying $20.00 per year. These dues will go towards paying for a membership in the national organization, The Society of Women Engineers. Failure to do so will result in members being dropped for nonpayment of dues and non membership in the national organization.
Section 4. All voting members and officers of the OSU Student Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers must be currently enrolled for at least 6 credits at Oregon State University and pay student fees.
Section 5. Membership shall not be denied to any student on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, disabled veteran or Vietnam era veteran status.
Article IV
Officers
Section 1. The executive officers of this chapter shall include the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Section 2. The duties of the executive officers are described below:
The President shall be the chief executive officer of the chapter and, as such, shall preside over all meetings. The President shall be responsible for guiding the direction of the organization and encouraging the generation of ideas for meetings and activities.
The Vice President shall preside at meetings in the absence of the President. The Vice President shall plan all meetings, provide speakers, prepare agendas for all activities, and organize trips to regional and national conferences.
The Secretary shall keep a record of all meetings and shall have the minutes typed up and sent to all officers. These minutes shall be available to all members via the chapter webpage. The Secretary shall preserve all papers relating to the chapter affairs, and prepare and submit all reports requested by the University, Student Involvement, the Chapter Advisor, and the parent body – The Society of Women Engineers, – subject to presidential approval. The Secretary shall keep a record of all student members who have paid dues.
The Treasurer shall collect all dues and assessments promptly. The Treasurer shall keep adequate financial records and supply these to the officers or advisors upon request. The Treasurer shall be in charge of fundraising.
Section 3. The general officers of this chapter shall include Industry Relations, Pre-College Chair, Professional Development, Web Page Design, and Social Chair.
Section 4. The duties of the general officers are described below:
Industry Relations shall act as the official liaison between the chapter and industries. They shall keep an official book that records all information regarding contacts in industry for future officers. They shall also hold responsibility for arranging guest speakers and tours from industries.
The Pre-College Chair shall have the responsibility of arranging outreach opportunities for grades K-12. These activities shall allow members to introduce children, girls in particular, to science and engineering. The pre-college chair shall also hold the responsibility of organizing volunteers for these events.
Professional Development shall have the responsibility of arranging activities that allow members to develop their professional skills. These activities may include resume workshops, mock interviews, career panels, etc. Activities will depend on the interest of the chapter as a whole.
Web page design shall hold the responsibility of keeping the official Oregon State University Student Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers current. The web page should include information of interest to the chapter, such as meeting minutes, next meeting date, planned activities, etc.
Social chair shall hold the responsibility of arranging social activities that allow members the opportunity to build relationships with other students.
Section 5. Officers shall have earned at least 6 credit hours in their most recently completed term. This requirement does not apply to first term freshmen or first term transfer students.
Section 6. Officers shall be registered for at least 6 hours currently.
Section 7. Officers shall not be on disciplinary probation.
Section 8. Officers shall have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 and not have been on probation for the most recently completed term prior to the term of election.
Section 9. A graduate student must pay student fees and meet the same requirements as an undergraduate student with the exception that full time status shall be a minimum of 6 hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.
Article V
Elections
Section 1. The officers shall be nominated in April or May of each year. Election shall be by secret ballot and the candidates receiving the most votes shall be named to their respective offices.
Section 3. Officers shall be elected to serve for one year and their term of office shall begin at the end of the last executive meeting of spring term.
Section 4. Vacancies in offices shall be filled by nomination and voting of a quorum of active members.
Section 5. Additional officers, standing or special, which will not be members of the executive committee, shall be appointed by the President as the association or the executive Committee deems necessary to carry on the work of the association.
Article VI
Meetings
Section 1. The regular meetings of the association shall be held on the third Thursday of each month from October to May unless otherwise ordered by the association or by the executive committee.
Section 2. Meetings of the elected officers shall take place regularly on the first Thursday of each moth from October to May unless otherwise ordered by the association or by the executive committee.
Section 3. Special meetings may be called by the President or the Executive Committee and shall be called upon the written request of the association. The purpose of the meeting shall be stated in the notice and three days’ notice shall be given except in cases of emergency.
Section 4. Fifty-one percent plus one (50%+1) of the members of the association shall constitute a quorum.
Article VII
Advisor
Section 1. One or more advisors shall be appointed each year. Responsibilities shall be those assigned by Oregon State University’s Student Conduct Regulations.
Article IX
Amendments
Section 1. Amendments to the constitution may be proposed at any general meeting.
Section 2. The amendment must be submitted in writing.
Section 3. The amendment will be voted on at the next general meeting. This allows on month between proposal and voting.
Section 4. A two-thirds vote is required to pass a proposed amendment.
