I’m a third-year undergraduate student at Oregon State University majoring in Political Science with a minor in Applied Journalism. I have worked in a variety of reporting and editing roles for our award-winning student newspaper The Daily Barometer and Orange Media Network, the umbrella organization for our college media program.
I will serve as a Reporting Intern at the Medford Mail Tribune this summer, as part of the 2019 Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism cohort.
2018 / The Daily Barometer
After extensively interviewing student government Rep. Andrew Oswalt, I broke a story detailing his white nationalist beliefs, drawing over 21,000 unique pageviews. My first story was linked to by the Associated Press and other news outlets. Over the next year I provided timely updates as Oswalt's landlord attempted to evict him, he was recalled from student government and he was convicted of a hate crime.
December 2017 / The Daily Barometer
As part of my reporting on politics and student activism, I wrote a cover story detailing Oregon State’s policies regarding free speech. I spoke with university administrators as well as representatives from multiple political groups on campus.
Spring 2018 / The Daily Barometer
I created and tracked posts for The Daily Barometer on Facebook and Twitter, as well as content on our website. I worked to direct traffic back to our site while also providing timely updates.
2017 / Orange Media Network
Over a year I co-produced and hosted a podcast called Perspectives with my friend Jack Woods. On the show, which is available on iTunes, we interviewed experts and students to help put complex political issues in their full context. My final episode comprised an extended interview with Oregon Sen. Sara Gelser.
July 2017 / The Daily Barometer
I managed a staff of eight reporters and two editors to create three print issues during the summer term. For each edition, I assigned all content and met with each reporter for multiple editing sessions, as well as producing much of the layout of the print product. This issue’s cover story dealt with the impact of a rare total solar eclipse.
February 2018 / The Daily Barometer
As a Student Government Beat Reporter I shot and edited weekly video stories, wrote accompanying scripts for our evening News Blasts and assisted with production in the studio. This story dealt with an increase to the student fee level to fund services for low-income students.
