Many people contributed to producing this progress report. The following OSU students were enrolled in Zoology 401: Tiah Angel, Brian Chipman, Kimberly Cleveland, Tammy Cronick, Jannet Ehlig, Dan Frerich, Chris Hunt, Todd Ison, Angela McGuire, Jennifer Oliver, Anja Schmelter, and Jennifer Whitsett. All these students contributed to the sampling effort for shore crabs and for percent cover estimates in Yaquina Bay during the fall term of 1997. Without everyone's participation, we would not have been able to acquire such a good data set. Most of the students took the initiative to start their own project or to analyse and write up the shore crab data. Chris Hunt focused his crab trapping efforts in Coos Bay and Winchester Bay during the summer and again in October with Todd Ison. Kimberly Cleaveland and Sylvia Yamada sampled crabs and grazing snails Coos Bay in July, while Zasha Bassett, an intern at Sustainable Ecosystem Institute monitored Siletz Bay.
This work was supported, in part, by grant number R/NIS-3-PD NA0061 RD17 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to the Oregon State University Sea Grant College Program and by appropriation made by the Oregon State legislature. The views expressed herein are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of NOAA or any of its subagencies.
This has been the first year that Drs. Yamada and Allison offered this sampling course. We all learned a lot and in future years we will continue to develop these methods and document this invasion in progress.
